How do slip and fall accidents affect the elderly?

Falling is the fifth leading cause of death among seniors. Among people ages 65 and older, slip and fall accidents account for 40 percent of deadly injuries. One of the most typical injuries sustained by the elderly when they fall is a hip fracture.

Upon suffering a hip fracture, several elderly people frequently encounter complications, and never experience a complete recovery. Hip fractures greatly lower mobility, and can cause much sorrow and ultimately, death. It has been shown that 25 percent of seniors who suffer a hip fracture succumb to their injury within one year.

Among the factors that contribute to the likelihood of seniors suffering from slip and fall accidents are advanced age, weak control of posture, poor reaction time, low levels of activity, reduced vision, diminished balance, side effects of medication and prior falls or injuries. In addition, environmental dangers that were previously considered to be harmless could be very hazardous for seniors. Furthermore, poor lighting or wet or slippery floors could contribute to a slip and fall accident.
