Brachial plexus palsy, a type of
Florida birth injury, is an injury to a newborn's nerves. It occurs when their neck is stretched or pressured during delivery, and happens commonly with larger babies.
The nerves injured in Brachial plexus palsy control the newborn's shoulders, arms, hands and fingers. An injury to these nerves can result in long term or permanent paralysis of one or both of their limbs.
There are four basic types of
Florida Brachial plexus palsy injuries:
- Neuropraxia – the most moderate form of injury, this is a stretching of the neck without permanent damage. Newborns often heal from this injury in a matter of weeks.
- Neuroma – this is an injury that occurs, which while healing builds up additional scar tissue. While the injury takes longer to heal, newborns typically see improvement in a matter of a few months.
- Rupture – a more severe injury, this means the nerves in a newborn's neck are torn but not where the neck attaches to the spine.
- Avulsion – the most severe type of injury, when the nerves are torn from the spine. Almost always results in lifetime paralysis.
If your child has suffered a
Florida birth injury, and you believe it may be the fault of the doctors or nurses that assisted with the delivery, you may have a legal case to earn financial compensation for your family.
