People between the ages of 16-20 face a higher chance of being injured or killed in a car crash over any other age group. There are a number of reasons for these kinds of statistics in this age group, ranging from the teenage years to young adulthood. Here are two recent news stories in our state that highlight the dangers of teenage drivers causing
Florida car accidents.
- Two Florida teens were killed after being involved in an accident caused by an angry ex-boyfriend. The two had been fighting when the boyfriend took his rage to the road and killed himself and his ex-girlfriend -- a tragic ending to a bitter night where emotions ran out of control.
- Two Florida teens were also killed in an accident involving an 18-wheeler. The teenage driver of the car apparently ran into the back of the semi-truck. Both teenagers died upon impact. The accident was still under investigation, so what led to the wreck is still inconclusive, but distracted driving is still a good possibility.
What we do know is that both of these stories tragically point out that teenagers are still developing and do not have the same emotional or mental capacities as adults. They are more easily distracted. Their emotions can be erratic and unrelenting.
It becomes vital for adults to make sure they monitor when, how, and with whom their teenagers drive, and if possible sending them through a full driver's education course. It is important to set limits and remind them regularly of the dangers of driving distracted, under the influence, or in a state of anger.
