The Villages News reported that a car crash Sunday led to the arrest of a Wildwood man on charges of DUI and hit-and-run.
According to officials from the Florida Highway Patrol, a 25-year-old man from Wildwood was taken into custody by law enforcement officers late Sunday night at approximately 10 a.m., allegedly in connection with an incident in which he ran into a telephone pole and then fled the scene of the wreck. The accident occurred in unincorporated Wildwood near the intersection of County Road 117 and County Road 116, and it is reported that witnesses positively identified the suspect as the driver of the vehicle that hit the pole.
Law enforcement officers located the suspect at his home and his vehicle had fresh damage to the front bumper, and the suspect refused to participate in field sobriety tests or allow a breathalyzer test to be conducted. He also refused to be examined by a doctor, despite law enforcement taking him to a local medical facility. He was transported to Sumter County Detention Center and booked on a $750 bond.
This follows a 2017 arrest in which the same man was taken into custody at a local Walmart for being combative after being told he was too drunk to drive home and a 2016 motorcycle accident in which he was injured on US Highway 301.
