CBS Channel 4 News reported recently that a man was killed in the early hours of Wednesday morning in Clay County, southwest of Jacksonville and inland from St Augustine, in a tragic accident in which his vehicle rolled over.
According to officials with the Florida Highway Patrol, the incident took place on Wednesday, February 8, 2021 between 3:15 a.m. and 3:30 a.m. Eastern Standard Time (EST) along U.S. Highway 17 north, just south of U.S. 17’s intersection with the East-West Parkway in the Fleming Island area of Clay County. The victim was a man from Green Cove Springs, the county seat of Clay County, and was 48 years of age.
For unknown reasons still under investigation, the man’s Toyota Camry sedan hit the left curb of the roadway, veered hard to the right, and overturned multiple times, careening off the road and coming to a rest on its roof along the outside grassy shoulder to the right of the road. The man was medically transported to Orange Park Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead of the injuries he sustained in the tragic single-car accident.
Troopers said he was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash. The accident is still under investigation.
