Clickorlando.com reported on a tragic incident in St. Cloud, Florida, in which a driver struck a crossing guard Thursday morning near an elementary school.
This incident occurred around 8:00 a.m. on Thursday, October 8 at the intersection of Michigan Avenue and 13th Street, adjacent to Michigan Avenue Elementary school. Representatives of the St. Cloud Police Department stated the driver was traveling east when they ran a red light before hitting the female crossing guard, who was on duty at the time. She was taken to Osceola Regional Medical Center for treatment with injuries that are expected to be survivable. The driver of the vehicle remained at the scene and is cooperating with investigators.
Osceola School District administrators reported that their crisis team as well as the staff and faculty of Michigan Avenue Elementary School were contacting parents of students that witnessed the event and are available to those students as needed for support. “Our thoughts and prayers are with the crossing guard and her family at this difficult time,” spokespeople from the school district stated in a statement released after the accident.
The intersection was closed for the investigation and cleanup but was reopened later that day.
