Officer.com reported on the tragic death of a police captain with the Miami-Dade Police Department in an off-duty crash Sunday that also hospitalized his wife, who is in critical condition.
Preliminary reports from the Broward Sheriff’s Office indicate the accident occurred in the 11800 block of Griffin Road in Cooper City, around 1:00 p.m. Sunday. Deputies and paramedics arrived at the scene to find two vehicles, one overturned and the other engulfed in flame. The crash is still under investigation, and no other details have been released on the accident.
The victim, a 59-year-old man who was a 36-year veteran of the Miami police force, was the father of New England Patriots running back James White, and the mother was airlifted to a local hospital in critical condition in the same incident, as was at least one more person involved in the incident. James White had been scheduled to play Sunday night with the Patriots against the Seattle Seahawks, but was understandably inactive.
The victim had himself played college football for Florida A&M University, and had taken in a friend of their son after a death in the family who also went on to play NFL football with the Cincinnati Bengals.
