A 36-year-old West Palm Beach woman was critically injured after being struck by a vehicle in a hit-and-run car accident Saturday morning as she checked her mail outside her West Palm Beach area home, according to Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office investigators.
The Palm Beach Post reports that the woman stepped into the roadway on the 2800 block of Chickamauga Avenue to retrieve her mail, around 7:00 am on Saturday. She was struck by a vehicle headed eastbound on the residential street in the Westgate neighborhood, and the driver sped off without stopping.
Her husband found her unconscious on the side of the road, and she was taken to St. Mary’s Medical Center where she is in critical condition, having suffered a skull fracture, a spine injury, and multiple other broken bones. Her family does report she has woken up and doctors have been able to remove the breathing tube, although she remains in critical condition.
Investigators have identified and seized the vehicle, a 2008 Toyota Camry, although the driver has not been identified. Local authorities continue to search for the driver.
