According to AAA, Florida leads the country in bicycle accidents. In 2017, there were nearly 800 deaths from bike accidents in Florida. Some of the biggest causes of bicycle accidents are failure to yield right of way and poor lighting. According to locals, many motorists fail to obey the traffic laws which are set forth to protect bicyclists. Other major causes of motor vehicle and bicycle accidents include distracted driving, fatigued or drowsy driving, drunk driving, speeding, and road rage or aggressive driving. Hazardous road conditions have also been linked as a contributing factor in the accidents.
Bay News 9 reports that two people have been killed in an accident involving a bicyclist and one motorcyclist.
The crash occurred at about 11:30 on Saturday on Bayshore Boulevard in Tampa.
According to Tampa police, three motorcycles were driving northbound on Bayshore when a bicyclist attempted to cross the roadway in a crosswalk.
One of the motorcyclists struck the bicyclist, instigating a crash. Multiple good samaritans who witnessed the accident went to help the motorcyclist and the bicyclist. Sadly, the motorcyclist, who was in his 30s, died at the scene of the crash.
The bicyclist, who was in their 50s, was found several yards away from the scene of the crash and was rushed to a local hospital. They succumbed to their injuries from the crash while they were at the hospital.
According to a witness, the operator of the motorcycle was speeding at the time of the crash.
The crash still remains under investigation.
