Fox Channel 11 News reported recently that a motor vehicle accident just after midnight on Sunday morning near the town of Mulberry led to the death of a young boy from Plant City.
According to officials from the Polk County Sheriff’s Office, the accident occurred between 12:00 a.m. and 12:15 a.m. Eastern Standard Time (EST) near the intersection of Florida State Route 60 and Coronet Road. A man from Mulberry was allegedly driving a Toyota Corolla compact sedan westbound on State Route 60 in the outside lane of the roadway. At the same time, a Wauchula man 42 years of age was traveling south on Coronet Road in a pickup truck towing a trailer, with two children as passengers, one 12 years of age and one 14 years of age. The impact ejected the driver and 12-year-old from the vehicle, while bystanders extricated the 14-year-old. The younger child was taken to St Joseph Hospital in Tampa where he died of his injuries. The older child was treated at Lakeland Regional Health Center for a broken collarbone, while the driver was treated at Lakeland for a broken neck and leg and is in critical condition.
