Buses Allowed To Drive On The Shoulder In Pinellas As Part Of Pilot Program

Traffic on Route 275 between Pinellas County and Hillsborough County is terrible, which could be why Pinellas County is undergoing an ambitious pilot program for public transit. Eminetra reports.

Special buses will start running on the shoulder of Route 275 between North Fifth Avenue along I-275 to Gandhi Boulevard in St. Petersburg. The goal is to prevent the bus system from tying up traffic and improve schedules.

The buses may drive on the shoulder only when traffic is below 35 mph. Once beyond the traffic jam, the buses must move back into the normal flow of traffic. The buses have also been specially wrapped.

To prepare for this, the Florida DOT widened the shoulders of I-275 and improved lighting along the stretch. Under the pilot program, you must give way to buses on shoulders and it’s illegal for you to follow them.

We hope that the program works well, but there will be an adjustment period where people might panic or think that the bus is driving illegally. Please tell others about this program to reduce the chances of an accident.

Public transit routes allow people to get from A to B with much less risk. It’s safer than driving on your own and it’s better for the environment to boot.
