For the most part, taking a bus to get around town is much safer, statistically speaking, than driving your own vehicle. Drivers who operate city and state transportation buses normally must obtain a commercial driver’s license, which usually requires stricter and more comprehensive testing than a normal driver’s license. Most of the accidents that involve buses are usually the fault of the other driver. When these accidents do occur, no matter who is at fault, it is likely that people will be injured.
The Tallahassee Democrat reports that a StarMetro bus that was involved in an accident with a car, injuring several people. Isiah Taylor was riding a StarMetro bus home from Governor’s Square Mall on Saturday evening when a crash knocked him from his seat.
The 22-year-old reported that he felt a violent shudder. He looked and saw that the bus had swerved off of the roadway and hit a tree.
On Sunday, officials from the city said that a review of security footage revealed that a car had run a stop sign at the corner of North Duval and West Georgia streets at about 6:37 p.m. That car hit the front of the bus, turning it into a mass of unrecognizable, twisted metal.
The Tallahassee Police Department is conducting a full investigation. The bus driver, as well as some other passengers, were transported to area hospitals for their injuries. The bus driver suffered from serious injuries.
Taylor said that he thought he saw between 7 to 10 people injured and thanked God that the bus had not been crowded.
