Florida Ranks Highest for Car Accident Drowning

Car Accident Drownings Any car accident is dangerous, but one few people consider is driving into a body of water. According to a November 8, 2014 article in the Orlando Sentinel, more people drown in cars in Florida than in any other state.

Car Accident Drownings

Data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration cites Florida as the most dangerous place in the nation when it comes to victims drowning in their cars, with South Florida particularly deadly. Palm Beach County has the most people drown in motor vehicles, followed by Broward and Miami-Dade counties. Orange, Duval, Collier, and Lee also recorded car drownings.

What makes South Florida so dangerous?

The likeliest reason that Florida is the most dangerous state for car accident drowning in the nation – particularly south Florida – is it has more bodies of water by its roads than any other state. Between naturally occurring water and man-made retention ponds, the state is a risk for drowning if a car runs off road.

Driving into Water Often Tragic

Driving into water can be fatal even when the victim remains conscious after impact. The moment a car enters the water, water begins flooding in. Opening a door can be impossible, and power windows often fail to work. When a car enters the water upside down – as in 63 percent of cases – the damage can be even worse, decreasing the chance of a victim surviving. For anyone who drives into a body of water, staying calm and getting out quickly are a must.

Unfortunately, many victims of car accidents involving a body of water don’t make it out alive. If you’ve lost a loved one in a car accident drowning experience caused by someone else’s actions, you may be able to file a personal injury lawsuit for damages. In Florida, the law (Florida Code Statute 95.11) gives you four years from the date of injury or death to file a suit for damages.
