Petition to Pass Amber May Law
October 29, 2007, Summerfield, Florida – the parents of a young girl killed in a parasailing accident are trying to pass legislation that would regulate the parasailing industry for the first time.
On August 18, 2007, Amber May White, a 15-year-old from Summerfield, Florida, went parasailing with her sister at the Wyndham Resort in Pompano Beach. The parasailing operator lost control and the rope broke free of the boat, slamming Amber and her sister Crystal into the rooftop of a nearby hotel and throwing them into a palm tree. While Crystal survived the incident with head injuries, Amber suffered a broken neck and was declared brain dead the following day.
The White family, determined to prevent further injury or loss of life from this popular vacation sport, is working to pass the Amber May Law. This bill would stipulate rules pertaining to the equipment and operation of parasailing, which has previously gone completely unregulated. Florida Senator Gwen Margolis will be introducing the bill.
