On August 19, 2011, an early morning South Florida crash killed an unborn child and the expectant mother.
The crash occurred on Interstate 75, just north of Northwest 138th Street. According to the Florida Highway Patrol, a driver with California license plates was traveling the wrong direction in the southbound lanes of I-75.
Right before the deadly crash occurred, police were informed a dark blue Honda was traveling in the wrong direction. Officials had started looking for the wrong-way driver. The accident occurred around 5:45 AM and affected multiple people and vehicles.
When rescue crews arrived on scene, they airlifted the pregnant woman to Jackson Memorial Hospital Ryder Trauma Center, but the woman and her unborn child later died of the injuries sustained. Two other adults were hospitalized after this accident; however, their conditions are not known.
The crash caused Interstate 75 to be closed down for five hours between Miramar Parkway in Broward County and Miami Gardens Drive in Miami-Dade. The morning commute was heavily affected due to this fatal crash.
Police are not sure if alcohol contributed to this crash, but are checking the Honda driver's blood alcohol content level.
