The Sun Sentinel recently reported on the underlying causes of deadly Broward County crashes. According to Florida state traffic-crash data, careless driving and failing to yield the right of way were the most common causes of motor vehicle crashes in Broward County in 2010.
Careless driving, which is another term for distracted driving, was the leading factor behind most fatal Broward County traffic accidents. This means that drivers in Broward County are attempting to do multiple things at the wheel.
The distractions that motor vehicle operators participate in include talking on the cell phone, texting at the wheel, changing radio stations, selecting iPod songs, and grooming and applying makeup. When drivers try to do too many things, instead of focusing on driving, fatal accidents occur.
When drivers are distracted and are not purely focused on the road, their responses are delayed. This can cause many deadly crashes.
Because there is no law in Florida about cell phones and distracted driving, police officers write tickets under the general category of the careless-driving statute.
In addition, speeding and failing to yield the right of way also led to many fatal accidents in Broward County, as did driving under the influence of alcohol.
Chalik & Chalik would like to remind Florida motorists to follow the road rules and focus on driving at the wheel. Don't become a statistic.
