Could street racing be the cause of three teen fatalities over the weekend? According to Florida authorities, several South Florida teens were involved in street racing, which led to a crash that claimed three of their lives.
Miami-Dade police indicated that 19-year-old Alberto De Jesus Coteron Oliva was behind the wheel of a Honda Civic, when he lost control of his vehicle. His car crashed into a concrete light pole in Doral, Florida, causing two of his passengers to be ejected from the car. Police stated that a third passenger was trapped inside the vehicle.
All three teenage passengers were killed at the crash site, and Oliva fled the scene of the accident after suffering cuts and bruises. Approximately 18 hours later, Oliva turned himself in and was charged with leaving the scene of an accident with death involved and three counts of vehicular homicide.
According to people who knew Oliva and the passengers, the teens were out for a ride to celebrate before the first day of school on Monday.
Witnesses to this South Florida crash indicated that a Civic and Infiniti were traveling at a very high rate of speed before the Civic crashed. Police are still searching for the black Infiniti that Oliva was racing against near northwest 12 Street and 99th Avenue.
Although Oliva never had a criminal record, he was fined 16 times for different traffic violations.
As of Monday, Oliva remained in jail, and bail has been set for $52,000.
