The Dalai Lama's nephew, 45-year-old Jigme Norbu, was killed in a car-pedestrian accident this week in Miami-Dade, FL. The accident occurred around 7:30 p.m. on Monday.
Norbu was participating in a 300 mile march in support of Tibetan rights, called the “Walk for Tibet”. The February 14-26 march was intended to run from St. Augustine to West Palm Beach.
Norbu, who was walking near the white line on the edge of a local highway when he was struck by a 31-year-old driver from Palm Beach with two kids in the car, was said to be dead when emergency personnel arrived on the scene.
Norbu was the son of Takster Rinpoche, the Dalai Lama's eldest brother. A spokesperson for His Holiness said that the Dalai Lama was "saddened" when he heard the news and that he remembered him in his prayers on Tuesday.
Our sympathies go out to all of those involved in this fatal Florida accident, and we urge both pedestrians and drivers to be more aware to try to avoid these types of crashes in the future.
