Months ago, a teenager was killed in a Coral Springs car crash, which could have been caused by some confusion surrounding an intersection that allowed the signal lights to blink at night. The fatal crash, which occurred at the intersection of Riverside and Coral Ridge drives, claimed the life of Alejandro Romeo.
Romeo was a passenger in his mom’s car, which was broadsided by a Nissan truck. The truck crashed into the passenger side where Romeo was sitting and then rammed into Riverside Elementary School.
The lights were blinking red on Riverside and yellow on Coral Ridge the night of the fatal Broward County auto accident.
According to Broward County Traffic Engineering, the lights at Riverside and Coral Ridge were put on the blinking schedule in 1991; however, there have been five traffic accidents and one fatality at this intersection in the last two years.
There are over 300 intersections in Broward County alone that operate on a blinking schedule each night between 9:00 PM and midnight. Officials say that many motorists like the lights to blink so they can proceed with caution and not have to wait for the light to turn green in the middle of the night.
However, because of the accidents and fatality that occurred at the intersection of Riverside and Coral Ridge, Broward County has made changes to the intersection by no longer allowing the lights to blink at night.
The Law Offices of Chalik & Chalik would like to extend our deepest condolences to the family and friends of Alejandro Romeo.
