A Georgia Tech Professor dies this past Saturday in a tragic bike wreck in the Florida Panhandle. The crash may have been the product of negligent driving.
The victim of the crash, 33-year-old Kurt Lang Frankel, of Atlanta, was riding his bicycle on the shoulder of U.S. 93 in Walton County when he was hit from behind.
The Mercedes Benz C240, the car that hit Frankel, was being driven by 19-year-old Alexandra Elise Alford. She was headed east on 93 in the outside lane when she hit the back of Frankel's bike.
According to police, Frankel was wearing his helmet at the time of the crash, which happened around 8:30 a.m. on Saturday. However, Frankel died about 45 minutes later at nearby Sacred Heart Hospital.
Frankel was an assistant professor of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences at Georgia Tech. Georgia Tech President G.P. "Bud" Peterson had this to say about the accident.
"This is a loss for the entire Georgia Tech community, but especially for his colleagues and students in Earth and Atmospheric Sciences. On behalf of Georgia Tech, please accept our compassion and support, and know that our thoughts are with you during this difficult time."
Our condolences go out to the family of the deceased and anyone else who has been affected by this Florida accident.
