It was incorporated in the early 1960s as Sunrise Golf Village by a developer who built model homes appealing to retirement aged people. At the time, residents numbered just over 4,000 and the city itself covered less than two square miles of land. By the early 1970s, the community had grown as Broward County expanded. The name, which had lost its appeal, and was changed to simply Sunrise.
