Texting While Driving – a Major Cause of Deadly Florida Car Accidents

In this age of convenience and modern electronics, many of us multitask behind the wheel. Eating breakfast on the way to work, applying makeup in the rearview mirror, talking on our cell phones or even shaving at traffic lights are common occurrences.

Although the dangers of distracted driving have been pounded into our minds since we first sat behind a wheel, very few people view multitasking while driving as a safety hazard. However, statistics state the opposite, with evidence of over 5,500 deaths resulting from distracted driving in 2009 alone.

From talking on the phone, to setting a GPS or changing the radio station, distracted driving can take on a number of forms. However, because it takes your eyes, hands and mind off the road, texting while driving is by far one of the most dangerous and common types of distracted driving.

A study conducted at the University of Utah found that drivers who text are more cognitively impaired and have a longer response time than a driver with a .08 blood alcohol level.

Additionally, it has been found that texting while driving increases the risk of accidents 23.2 times over unimpaired driving.

Florida car accidents caused by distracted drivers are the leading cause of death among teen drivers. While this may seem like a purely generational issue, it is important to note that even 20% of people over the age of 40 admit to texting behind the wheel.

With dangers like these in mind, it is important to consider how these risks can be avoided. The answer is as easy as muting your ringer or turning off your phone for the entire time your car is running. This simple action can result in fewer accidents, injuries and unnecessary deaths.

At this time, the state of Florida has not successfully passed any legislature outlawing the use of cell phones while driving. For this reason, it is even more important that drivers go out of their way to ensure that they and their friends are not partaking in this dangerous driving habit.

If you or someone that you love has had the misfortune of being involved in a Florida car accident with a distracted driver, you may be eligible to gain financial compensation for your troubles. To learn more, contact a Fort Lauderdale auto accident attorney today.
