Recently, Bausch and Lomb announced that they are recalling the popular ReNu contact lens cleaning product, ReNu with MoistureLoc. Since last summer, there have been 109 cases of a rare eye infection in ReNu with MoistureLoc users. Of the 109 cases, at least 8 required a corneal transplant to correct the problem.
ReNu with MoistureLoc can cause the rare fungal infection fusarium keratitis, which can lead to corneal ulcers and blindness if left untreated. Fusarium keratitis is a fungus that is usually found in soil; it can be detected by symptoms including:

- Redness
- Eye Discharge
- Sensitivity to Light
- Blurred Vision

Bausch and Lomb began their investigation and subsequent recall of ReNu with MoistureLoc occurred after a New Jersey ophthalmologist had seen three cases of the rare fusarium keratitis cases in the past three months.
Of the three New Jersey Cases and the 106 other cases of fusarium keratitis around the country, all of them share at least one common factor: all cases were either user of ReNu with MoistureLoc, or users of a generic product, also manufactured by Bausch and Lomb, with similar ingredients. Many of the cases involved users who wear soft contact lenses and used ReNu with MoistureLoc.
What is alarming about fusarium keratitis arising in ReNu with MoistureLoc users, is that fusarium keratitis is generally caused by soil getting into the eye and causing an infection; it is often found in more agricultural settings.
